Bye bye day

Monday, December 18th, 2006
Almost over. After a sunday at the office, this monday looked like a tuesday to me. This afternoon Stebi left to Spain (have a good trip Stebi!!!). We miss him. At least Coro and Sara invited us to have dinner and then we had some karaoke time. We also had some time to carve finally Jack. We figured out that it was about to get rotten so after walking around with it, we checked gravity....amazing!

Manu was in charge of carving some expression to Jack

Cocina y Jack

Kitchen with Jack

Jack o sink

I found the best way to empty Jack is by using a spoon to remove the seeds and then use some water to put them out. Then I left it on the sink for a while making this creepy picture. It seems like Jack is the responsible for this kitchen mess and he feels very proud of it.

Stebi is gone so I took this picture while storing his bike on his room...we miss you Stebi!!!

Bye bye Jack...

This is what surprised me the most. Javi and me found this ice rink just inside a skyscraper plaza complex. Our plan is to comeback during the night so we can see the real xmas atmosphere...and fall a little bit on the ice!

Downtown is not only about skyscrapers. There is always space for old stone buildings which make a big contrast. Also big cathedrals...

Javi noticed this strange top of the skyscraper and suggested me to publish it so the architects can have an opinion about it... I thought it was an interesting contrast

The city offers a wide cultural range of activities and we found many theatres on our way. I liked the entrance of this one.
'

Pittsburgh makes you cross bridges if you want to get somewhere. Always enjoying the views from the bridges over the wide rivers.

Putting back to practice my old pitcher skills in front of some pirates star, at pnc park

Visiting downtown with Stebi was the same day when all the schools had a field trip so we were lucky to find the place where all the buses where parked..exactly like the simpsons bus. I just want to go back to school with my backpack..

Bienvenido Invierno!

Winter starts

It was getting colder, the trees were naked and there were a lot of snowstorm forecasts. But for me, Winter started the day I was going to play tennis and I found the courts locked...Fortunately I found an alternative plan playing at Schenley park, some magic place I promise to take some pictures sooner or later.
Welcome Winter!

Desde mi ventana

Camino a la cmu I

On my way to cmu I

Since this was the first day with some snow on the street I decided to take some pictures to show how a walking trip to cmu looks like. This is the typicall alley that reflects some american lifestyle.

On my way to cmu II

This is Ellsworth, the street where I spend 15 minutes everyday to reach cmu. It's long enough to see many things: an elementary school with some basketball courts with fences, bad looking houses on rent, many cars on a rush to work or many school buses and u buses. Not so many people walking on the pavement...

On my way to cmu III

As we get closer to cmu, more and more huge houses show up

Aeropuerto

Airport

The first times you take a plane are full of emotions about trying something as new and different as flying. Keeping your tickets safe in your pockets, you cross the airport, which is more like a set of different test you need to pass in order to get your goal: fly for your first time.

I feel lucky I have been able to take a plane more than once. Every mile
flown makes the flying experience something more common. And the test at the airport becomes and easy routine.

Last times I have
flown meant important changes in my life. Changes of location, lifestyle and even temporal home. When I spent some hours in Chicago airport on my way back home to Pittsburgh, I saw those magic and surreal places of the pictures which represented my current idea of an airport: some kind of time tunnel. Some transition moment separating two different situations of my life. Being on an airport is like dreaming on night between two different days.

I like airports, I'm afraid of airports.

Sunday Football

Sunday, November 26th, 2006 It was Monday and it was hard to wake up and get to the church service of 10. Since Peter works as a musician there we woke up at 6 to make it. After the service, which was exactly what I remember from my other times visiting, we went down town, trying to find some tickets to watch the Minnesota Vikings. We made it!

After the 3 hours game it was time to enjoy the rest of the day at home. There's no place like home after all.

About to enter the game

After finding some half priced tickets from some resellers on the street, we found ourselves surrounded by people in purple and limos to enjoy the most spectacular American sport of all: an NFL game between the vikings and the arizona cardinals (probably the worst team of the whole NFL). The vikings managed to win at the end, but it was not easy...

The kickoff

My favorite part of football is the kickoff. Each team on one side. The team who kicks the ball starts runnig to the other end, where someone receives the ball and starts running covered by his teammates. The crashes are spectacular!

Cheerleaders, even on high levels

I might not be enough to be cheering and jumping for 3 hours, so from time to time, the went up to the higher levels to cheer more personally the upper crowd like us.

I think it's impossible to jump and cheer for 3 hours non stop...It must be tough to be cheerleader.

Touchdown!

Touchdown!

After the Vikings scored, the cheerleaders moved to the endzones and this brave men run like crazy with the flags. It was a good show after all. Meanwhile, the viking's cheer song was played which combined with the first down viking horn made a really viking atmosphere.

The packers fan

Imagine a full arena of purple. All but one. Someone dressed in green and yellow, as the colors of the green bay packers, the vikings rivals! This man was happy making himself noticeable and suffering each time the vikings scored. I'm sure he enjoyed being against the mainstream...

On the other side, I found this vikings fan wearing the following t-shirt: 'My two favorite teams are the vikings and whoever is playing the packers'

A good example of rivalry after all

Living the real Indian American experience

Saturday, November 25th, 2006

It was hard to wake up again. After lunch we finally came up with some plans for the day. The stop at the parking with the tepee was still in my mind so when Peter asked me about which plans to do I told him I would like to visit theIndian reserve. Quickly we set up the plan and his family taught me how to play blackjack, because that is what is all about at a reserve. Casinos are not allowed in the state but there.

After some miles we reached the reserve and there was nothing special there but casinos. I had never been to a casino before and it was strange to be there. I didn't like to see so many people in front of the slot machines or playing cards with faces that didn't show any kind of excitement but just addition.

We first tried the slot machines, but after 3 bucks lost and no fun we moved on to the blackjack tables, where the minimum bet was 5bucks. I got my beginner's luck and left the table earning 15$ :) Almost enough to live for a month here :P

After the casino experience, Peter took me to visit Northfield, where his former college is located. We visited St Olaf and watched a choir rehearsal. They are very proud and very good at it.

We also met Laura, Peter's friend who is an artist and was carving some wood sculpture. After the exhibition we moved to the town centre and had a couple of beers on the only bar (I might be wrong).

We ended the night at a house party full of Spanish language students...another great chance to practice my Spanish :P

Another great day in Minnesota!

Llegada a la reserva india...Esto promete!

Finally we got to the indian reserve...this is going to be interesting!

An indian reserve? This looks to me more like casino land

Mystic lake: A huge casino in the middle of the indian reserve including a luxurious hotel. The tribe memebers who own this land live on the percentage of the earnings of the casino so they don't work at all.

After trying baseball, junk food and a not very healthy lifestyle, only one thing was left: going to the casino. I first tried with the slot machines, but I didn't make any profit. Next step was the blackjack and beginner's luck was with me this time.

Happy on the way out of the casino with my earnings (10$)...later we realized it was not allowed to take pictures...ups!

I took this picture to make sure we were at an indian reserve. The symbol makes it clear.

Playing with fall

Friday, November 24th, 2006

Turkey was still around, so it was not easy to weak up that morning. Finally we managed to get ready to do some housework: rake leaves. Now I know how Peter and other Americans feel when Winter approaches. It was hard work, but it was worthwhile. I think the pictures reflect how much fun we had afterwards.

At night we moved towards downtown. First to enjoy some ethnic food at different ethnic malls, later some friends joined to drink some beers at good English looking pubs. Anything else? No need for it!

Esto no iba a ser fácil...

It was not going to be easy...
