Jeff Tweedy me sorprendió mucho.

I always pay special attention to the leaders of a music band. In their charisma. All of them have it in one or other way. Jeff Tweedy surprised me. The first impression was: It’s impossible this guy is the soul of Wilco. But after each song he performed, his strange way of dealing with the crowd, and it’s static singing, I was convinced.

Wilco

Is one of my favorite bands which was in my to-listen-live list. Jeff Tweedy got to Pittsburgh and it was a pleasure. I was with my friend Peter, who as a great artist, enjoyed the concert in a complete different way than me. While I was just excited to listen to some great songs, Peter analyzed the quality of the guitar sounds, lyrics and the amazing rarities of this band. He was converted to Wilco ☺, I was charmed.

Phonography

That's the name of the warm up band for the Wilco concert. Peter landend in Pitt that morning and started showing his spanish speaking skills with the rest of the spanish crew. After renting a terrible suv vehicle, we found our way to reach the college where the concert was held. The crowd didn't seem to be ready to show any gestures of gratefulness with the bands.

A little special day

Wednesday. Another day at the office. Only a miracle could rescue us. Or football! Barcelona was playing champions league and most of my officemates are big fans so it was an important day for them. We left our numbers and computers to look for a place where to watch the game.
We ended up in Pitt university. On the way I took some pics like the turist I love to be. Once we arrived we soon realized that this university has a more humanistic enviroment compared to our beloved robot land: Students on demostration, Halloween decorations everywhere, and a hall with a grand piano being played and people reading.
It was a pity that the game was a little boring and some of us could not even resist the temptation of falling asleep. However, Manu falls asleep almost everywhere, so it's not such a big deal...

Not everyone watched the whole game

Grrrr

Algunos conocereís la famosa 'the pink panther'.

Groarrr

Some might know the famous pink panther. Here it is her sister, 'the pitt panther'. It's the Pitt university mascot. Much fiercer than the carnegie mellon's tartans (anyone a clue of the meaning of that?)

My building

This is a corner of the Smith Hall building, where my shared office is located. All made with light brick and copper. Cars all around and in the background you can see some area under construction. Our friend Bill Gates is building a huge one. It's supposed to be a green one (silver medal). I'd like to see that, but It'll be up too late (2008).

Hasta me preguntaron la traducción de here we go steelers here we go y acabó todo el bar cantando vamos steelers vamos...

Sunday Football

My first real Pittsburgh experience. This time I went with a new friend I met last night and his mother to a typical downtown bar to watch the game in a real atmosphere. From 4pm it was all about drinking beer and singing steelers here we go. Now I know how violent this game is. Just take a look at the video above that shows how Polamalu is tackled. I got his jersey to cheer for the steelers and a necklace with the black a gold colours.
Once the game was almost over Dan took me to visit his friends living nearby. 4 tatooed guys watching football, eating pizza and drinking light beer. How american! It was even more american than I though when they showed me some guns...scary! After this complete day, all I wanted was to go back home and spend some time with my spanish mates: that's kind of more peaceful!

Polamalu

The Laundry Room

There's always time for the weekly date with the laundry room. In spite of the comfortable sofa, it's not a very attractive idea to hang around.
The washing machines are not very practical: First you need to have in your pockets exactly 5 quarter coins, so everyday it's a good idea to save them in some pot if you want to wear fresh clean clothes from time to time.
Once you are ready, first step is to start it and wait til it gets half way full. Now it's time to pour the detergent and then do the correct timing so you can put your clothes inside. If you wait for too long you'll have to deal with a machine completely full of soap bubbles where to insert your clothes.
Some have already found a solution for this: Manu takes a look around his dirty clothes; There's always some shirt only halfway to stinkiness ;-)

Night Raid

Ikea is cheap. True, but not if you compare it with a good night raid on the trash day. As a result, Javi is sleeping on a new bed, Manu has a new bed base and our kitchen a new cupboard. Not to mention the two plastic chairs that are filthy but can be recovered...everyday has little details!

Deja Vu tenistico

Tennis Deja Vu

One year has almost passed since the last time, but things do repeat. It was so obvious that so many tennis in my head was heading directly to another hole on my hand. After 3 days playing I have finally got it. I had to play hard, drinkGatorade (strange flavors) and energy bars (called substitute meals). I hope Kung Bosse helps me recovering in spirit...

Halloween oreo

Another morning and it's time to have some typical american stuff: Halloween Oreo. They don't differ that much from the originals, just a different colour and larger amounts. At least this proves how impossible is to come back skinny home. New year's eve race will be a tough challenge this year.

Me and ghosts

On the way to the Giant Eagle we found this house that had its yard decorated on a very particular way the coming of Halloween. It might be terrifing with some darkness, because the sunny day with near 30 degrees wasn´t helping much to make it terrifing..

Calabazas para todos

Ardillas y conejitos

Squirrels and rabbits

Last night I got home a little late and I met different animals around the neighbourhood. It's hard to believe how can you find rabbits standing on the little backyards and squirrels walking on the power wires like circus acrobats without danger

Comida

Food

So far I haven´t mentioned the food issue. I might have complained about it from time to time...but today I feel like talking about it as the main subject. Using the famous and historic spanish behaviour of stealing (talk with Armando, he knows more about History) I have eaten for free for the first time since I got here.
But it is not as evil as it sounds. I´m not a thief. It´s just that I work at a university where there is always free food somewhere. Every seminar comes with 12 pizzas on the table, every conference has trays full of cookies. Any foxy and hungry student could live here as long as his own stomach could cope with the situation. There is even a web cam that shows the food available around...It´s another world. Being said all this, I put some examples taken from the baseball games (pics are from Coro, not mine)

Una visión

Jajajjaja!

A vision
Get up early in the morning and felt like checking last night game result. It ended up after nearly 5 hours...this sport can be very dangerous to watch..Here is the game overview:

Pirates unable to finish off red-hot Astros

The Pirates had the Astros on the ropes on three different occasions Wednesday, but Pittsburgh couldn't deliver the knockout punch and saw its losing streak reach six games during a 7-6 loss that lasted 15 innings and took nearly five hours to complete.

Baseball

Buenas noches Piratas!

Baseball

Tonight I have been watching the pirates at the baseball park. I was a little disappointed with the game, because I was expecting a real baseball game with lots of boring time on it, but It ended up being a tied up game that went along for more than three hours. We had to leave before it ended..Pirates are the worst team of the whole league, so it was really strange.
But the best part was the park. It´s across the river from downtown, so you can enjoy the view of the whole skyscraper lineup while watching the game live. I promise to put some decent pics when I get a camera and now I post a blur of a skyscraper. Good night Pirates!

Vacaciones turisticas

Washington
It is a monument-filled city. Many steps separate one from another. On the way: trees, squirrels and memorials to many dead soliders. It´s clear that for the americans, war is something terrible, but it´s a need. I didn´t leave without knowing how many times they had saved the world...

Rumbo a Washington

Me encanta esa peli...

Road to Washington

Although our house is not ready yet (the living room is looks like a battlefield), an easy and well organized trip to Washington renting 3 cars cropped up. I´m looking forward to it, not because of the white house, but because of the long lake where one famouse scene from Forrest Gump takes place. I love that movie...
Today has been a happy day. Finally my first tennis game here. It was not easy though, I had to wake up at 6 to be ready at the court at 8, but it was worthwhile!

See you next Monday with some pics from the capital... Enjoy your weekend!

Stinky sofas

No mercy battle: Two stinky sofas against my dosifier and 4 litres of deodorant. I´m not sure who the winner will be, but after sprinkling 2 litres, my arm was about to fall apart...Stinky sofas still winning.

A gusto

Comfortable

Sunday September the 17th, 2006

Finally. This is the first day I feel comfortable at my new temporary home. It might be cause I have cooked for my mates, or may be the slight less odor coming from my desk...I feel comfortable :) Even being the first day of trying to play tennis and not being able to...

Dejando Ikea

Leaving Ikea

Some people might feel sad after leaving such a place with so many attractive items. For us, it was the start of considering our apartment as a real place to stay and feel comfortable.
Sábado, 16 de Septiembre del 2006

Tantas cosas cansan.

New furniture

Saturday, September the 16th, 2006

So many activities makes you feel very tired. Saturday morning was a great opportunity for staying in bed til the hunger would makes us get out to visit wendy´s (nearest and cheapest place). We were really lucky. Just after crossing the street we found a garage sale with a wonderful leather 3 people sofa standing in front of us. Unfortunately it was sold, but we asked to the young cocaine addict couple about some other furniture. We ended up getting inside the house checking how terrible can be to live this kind of lifestyle. We left that horrible place without 50$ bucks but with a new kitchen table with 2 high chairs and also my new and stinky desk (i won). I have already bought a litre of odor removal product, but I think that it still likes to keep the taste of its former home...

New roots

Thursday, September the 14th, past midnight

It was about time!

After many hours wandering around the city visiting apartments and nights at the hotel talking about what to do next, finally it is time to start a new life in a new place.

The adventure started yesterday, after knowing that it was going to be the last day at the hotel. A trip to ikea was an important need to get a bed and also some other stupid stuff to fight against the echo of the empty room. Coming back with Manu from Ikea wasn't easy with 4 beds and extra stuff, a dark night, heavy rain and a important thunderstorm. We ended up lost in some forest road, but no one knows how, we found the way back to the big city. The night was not over: we moved all our stuff to our future new apartment and come back to the hotel late night. The morning after was a little bit of a surprise when I had to start working like a normal worker...this is going to hurt!

This afternoon, after our hamburger meal #15 (approx) we fixed our ikea beds. It looks more like a transport base, but it is almost as fun to assemble as a lego toy for adults. Now it's time to enjoy the hard work of today: Good night!

About to start playing with my lego/ikea toy.

Changing directions

Busy life and lacking of a camera are enough reasons for not keeping my blog structure. I hope to go back to my old style soon: pics and impressions.

Big hug to my readers!

Uff!.

A tough start

5 tough days. I never thought that arriving at a new unknown city and starting to find routine could be so demanding psychologically. Now that I have just found a place to start my routine, I can breath relaxed again. Uff!

Impresiones

Me encanta.

Impressions

It did not take me so long to decide that this city was not going to make me fall in love like Copenhagen did. I have the feeling that none states city will do it. Cars, skyscrapers and not so many huge trash cans. However, Pittsburgh does have something I like (I’m not talking about being the city of ketchup). I think Pitt is lucky to have two universities inside. They give Pittsburgh a young and calm atmosphere, with a couple of streets with shops and fast food restaurants and some spectacular buildings.
I promise to post some pictures of my favourite place so far: Leaving CMU, after crossing a bridge like the one Bart Simpson spits at cars from, we get closer to the other U: Pittsburgh University. Between both universities a great park is located with a church-cathedral and my favourite: “the cathedral of learning”. This one seems to be taken directly from Gotham City. I know batman is around. I love it.

Landing on the states always seemed to me like suddenly finding yourself in a movieset. This time was not different. While riding the bus from the airport to the u, I was able to see two wide rivers dividing in the night the skyscrapers area from the powerful spotlights that iluminated the stadium area.

A new adventure
It’s about to start. Next Thursday the 7th I’ll take the plane with 4 mates from different parts of Spain. This time, I’ll cross the ocean to write my master thesis at Carnegie Mellon (Pittsburgh).

I don’t feel much stressed, but I know next weeks are going to be difficult. With one contact person and a hotel room. That’s all. The rest is to be found.

I hope next time good news are posted here about my new life there.

Big hug!

My bag is ready to leave so it can add new stickers to its collection. The guests are a matlab book, algebra notes and a tennis ball.
